To Remember = To Love

 Five Holocaust survivors, born in five different countries, shared five very different life stories. Students turned those stories into five videos. The title of the project was taken from a poem by one of the five survivors, the writer and poet Halina Birenbaum.

The Man in the Clouds

For this project, students of three schools (the Koenigin Charlotte Gymnasium in Stuttgart; the Italian Carmelite School - Christian-Arab - in Haifa; the Leo Baeck Education Center - Jewish - in Haifa) have translated a Dutch children’s book into their native tongues (German, Arabic, Hebrew), based on the book’s English translation. Before, during and after their work on the translations, they discussed the book’s themes: (the dangers of) greed and materialism, compassion, selflessness, accepting ‘the other’, themes that are universal and play a central role in all three monotheistic religions. We managed to raise funds which enabled the publication of a printed edition of this very special trilingual version of the book. Koos Meinderts and Annette Fienieg, the author and illustrator (whose work is very popular in the Netherlands) have given us the right to use the text and the illustrations for such an edition. Comfort Food in Times of War

In 2024 and 2025, two groups of students of Leo Baeck worked online with students of two Ukrainian school, the ORT Educational Complex #141 in Kyiv and the Construction Professional College in Kropyvnytskyi. The topic was 'Comfort Food in Times of War'. We shared personal experiences that we had during the wars that our countries were (and still are) fighting, and talked about how food sometimes can help us cope with difficult situations. You can see one of the 2025 videos  here . In 2024, another video, made by students of the ORT Kyiv and Leo Baeck won a prize in the video competition of the Centropa Jewish Network .
